Artistic competitions give skaters freedom to explore
2 November 2004
In late November and early December, skaters on both islands will have an opportunity to take part in artistic competitions where artistry, musicality and interpretation are all important.
Artistic competitions are a great opportunity for New Zealand athletes to explore the world outside the technicalities of the sport. The competitions are open to all levels and are certain to prove fun for both the skaters and the audience.
Artistic competitions shift the emphasis away from jumps and spins to choreography, interpretation, transitions, and basic skating skills. When the new judging system arrives in New Zealand, these skills will make up a large part of a skater's final score -- up to 50 points will be awarded for these components.
